But today, we’re going to see that God can do great things with our wreckage.\n\nI’m going to read you a story from the Bible, about a man named Jacob, who got a really awesome vision from God. But to really understand the vision, we have to know where Jacob was at. We need to look at what was going on in his life at the time.\n\nJacob was trying to build a life for himself. He was trying to secure his own future, and acquire wealth. And the way he did this was really dishonest and sinful. Jacob had an older brother named Esau. And as the oldest son, Esau was entitled to their father’s inheritance. Their father was really rich, so this was a *huge* deal. In order to get his father’s inheritance, two things would have to happen. First, he would have to get his brother to release his right to the inheritance. Not likely. Second, he would have to get his father to bless him with Esau’s inheritance. This wasn’t likely either. Esau the oldest, which meant that by law, he would get the inheritance. Not only that, but Esau was also their father’s favorite child. So Jacob decided to do some pretty bad things to build his own wealth. \n\nOne day, Esau came home from a long trip. He had run out of food, so he was starving. And we don’t think straight when we are miserably hungry, do we? All we care about is food! Jacob had a fresh pot of stew on the stove, and Esau asked for some. But instead of helping his brother, Jacob said, “You can only eat some of this food, if you give me your birthright.” And since he wasn’t thinking straight, Esau sold his entire future for a bowl of soup.  \n\nAs bad as that was, Jacob’s next trick was way worse. His father had gone blind in his old age, and was on his death bed. Jacob went to him, pretending to be Esau, so that his father would give him Esau’s blessing. The old, blind, dying man fell for Jacob’s trick, and blessed Esau’s inheritance over to Jacob. What a guy!\n\nJacob had built a future for himself. Everything was going his way. But soon it all came crumbling down. Esau was so angry with Jacob, that he decided to kill him. So, Jacob had to run for his life. He ran away into the wilderness, all by himself. That night, he slept in the dirt, using a rock for a pillow. That doesn’t sound very comfortable, does it?\n\nCould you imagine that? One day, everything is going your way, and by that evening, you are sleeping in the dirt with a rock for a pillow! Jacob’s life was a wreck. It was a wreck that he made, himself. After tricking people, using people; lying, and deceiving to get the things he wanted, it all fell apart. And there he was all alone, sleeping with the snakes and the bugs, with his head on a rock. Let’s read what happened next…\n\n**READ GENESIS 28:10-22**\n\n[We recommend showing the Object Lesson video here.]\n\n**MAIN POINT**\n\nSo God appeared to Jacob in a dream, and pulled back the curtain, so that Jacob saw that God was up to something. He saw a stairway from heaven, and lots of activity! Angels were coming and going, doing the work that God gave them to do. God wasn’t finished with Jacob. This dream let Jacob know, that God was still at work behind the scenes. God was about to do something new in Jacob’s life. Even though Jacob’s life was a wreck, it was a wreck that God could work with. Jacob woke up excited about what he saw, and what his future might hold.\n\nOne beautiful thing about this story, is *where* God meets Jacob. We might expect God to tell Jacob, “Go back home and make things right with your brother, *then* I’ll meet with you.” Or we might expect God to call out Jacob’s sins, and send him on a quest to prove that he can change, *then* God would be willing to work with Jacob. Or, we might not even expect God to meet up with a guy like Jacob at all. \n\nBut God reaches out, right in the middle of Jacob’s mess. Jacob doesn’t encounter God on a mountaintop, or in a temple, or a castle. God doesn’t show up when Jacob does something really great with his life. God meets Jacob right where Jacob is at; right in the middle of the mess he created. Even though Jacob’s life has been torn apart, and he finds himself alone in the wilderness, God invites him to start over from that place.\n\n**DRIVE IT HOME**\n\nJacob’s story is like a little glimpse into what was to come hundreds of years later, when Jesus walked the earth. Jesus was *always* meeting people right in the wreckage of their messy lives. He would enter into their sinful messes, love them, and invite them to follow him from there. We know from the Bible that Jesus’ disciples had a lot of sinful issues; *major* sinful issues when they first met Jesus. Matthew cheated people out of their money. Peter used foul language1. Thomas was full of doubt. Simon was part of a terrorist group2. James and John were hateful racists3. And Jesus looked at this group of cheating, cussing, faithless, violent, racist men and said, “Follow me.”\n\n\n1 Matthew 26:74\n\n2 The Zealots were a militant group that performed many terrorist acts.\n\n3 Luke 9:51-55\n\nThe disciples changed their ways and became faithful followers of Jesus. But Jesus didn’t expect them to change first. In other words, they didn’t have to change so that they could follow Jesus. They followed Jesus so that they could change. \n\nSometimes we feel like we need to “get it together” before we can follow Jesus. We think we need to “build our lives” so that they are good enough for Jesus to work with.      But Jesus loves you, and wants to meet you, wherever you are. You don’t have to be perfect to begin following Jesus. He meets us in the middle of our messiness. \n\n**LARGE GROUP MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY:** \n\nHave the kids balance on their right foot and say the first word of the memory verse. Then have them hop to their left foot and say the second word, hop right again for the third word, and so on until they have said the entire verse. Practice several times seeing how fast they can get.\n\n“For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.” -Hebrews 3:4 (NIV)\n\n**CLOSE WITH A SIMPLE PRAYER**\n\nDear God, \n\nWe thank you for loving us as we are, wherever we are. Help us to start from here, and to follow you.\n\nIn Jesus’ name, "
